The COFUND action, one out of the in total six Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) under Horizon Europe, can grant organisations complementary funding for existing or novel doctoral or postdoctoral programmes at regional, national, or international levels through co-funding mechanisms. Proposed programmes can cover any research disciplines. Through this, the MSCA COFUND spreads the MSCA’s best practices by promoting high standards of training, career development, and excellent working conditions for researchers.

As stated in the official guide to applicants, COFUND is a mono-beneficiary action. Therefore, only one legal entity, established in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country, are eligible to apply as a beneficiary. The beneficiary can recruit, supervise, host or train researchers, either on its own or in conjunction with Implementing or Associated partners.  A beneficiary is eligible to receive up to €10 million per call.

A fixed COFUND allowance per researcher is provided, which can be used flexibly to support programme-related costs. Beneficiaries are expected to top up EU funding with their own or other funding sources. Finally, COFUND initiatives should hire at least three researchers and run up to five years.

In 2026, the evaluation of the call HORIZON-MSCA-2026-COFUND-01 will be organised in two different panels, doctoral programmes and postdoctoral programmes, but a single ranking list will be produced.

In 2027, the evaluation of the call HORIZON-MSCA-2027-COFUND-01 will be organised in a single panel, doctoral programmes.
