The Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems (Vinnova), a government agency under the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise (Klimat- och Näringslivsdepartementet), promotes sustainable growth by improving the conditions for innovation as well as administrating state funding for needs-driven research. In other words, by actively strengthening the innovation capacity in Sweden. Vinnova holds the vision that Sweden will be a world-leading country in research and innovation, in turn also an attractive place in which to invest as well as conduct business.

Vinnova stimulates and supports innovation by, for example:

  • Promoting national and international collaborations between companies, universities, research institutions, and the public sector.
  • Mobilising actors from different parts of society to a common objective.
  • Identifying what needs to be done.
  • Financing research and innovation through various funding calls.

On a yearly basis, Vinnova invests about 3 billion SEK in research and innovation.

Moreover, Vinnova pinpoints eight focus areas, namely, sustainable industry; sustainable food systems; sustainable mobility; sustainable precision health; sustainable societies; digital transformation; ecosystems for innovative companies; and emerging innovations.

Vinnova also cooperates with other funding organisations to implement certain funding programmes or calls. For instance, BioInnovation, a strategic innovation programme related to circular bioeconomy, is financed by Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten), and Formas, as well as the participating organisations. In addition, Vinnova manages the applications for BioInnovation calls.
