The European Innovation Council opens to defence and dual-use technologies
The European Innovation Council has announced an important update to its 2026 Work Programme: it can now support companies working on technologies with both civilian and defence applications. This includes areas, such as:
- Artificial intelligence;
- Quantum technologies;
- Advanced materials;
- Robotics;
- Cyber defence;
- Drones and other strategic technologies.
Start-ups and SMEs developing dual-use technologies may apply under the existing EIC Accelerator and STEP Scale Up rules. Funding can include grants of up to €2.5 million and equity investments of up to €30 million, depending on the programme and company profile.
In parallel, the EIC is launching a new EIC STEP Defence Scale Up call. The call has a total budget of €100 million and is aimed at companies scaling critical defence technologies. Eligible companies may receive up to €30 million in direct equity financing.
The new defence call will support companies working in areas such as, air and missile defence, drones, counter-drone systems and other critical defence technologies. Applications are open from 30 June to 28 October 2026, with results expected in early 2027.

EIC Accelerator dual-use
For start-ups and SMEs developing breakthrough technologies with both civilian and defence applications.
EIC STEP Scale Up dual-use
For scale-ups developing strategic technologies with strong growth and investment potential.
EIC STEP Defence Scale Up
For companies focused on scaling critical defence technologies and industrial capabilities.
This development is particularly relevant for companies working in AI, quantum, robotics, advanced materials, cyber, drones, sensing and other technologies with potential civilian, security or defence applications.
