European Investment Bank

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is the lending arm of the European Union. The EIB Group has two parts: the European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund. The EIF specialises in finance for small businesses and mid-caps.

EIB holds a number of relevant financing tools for SMEs in the start-up and scale-up phases, including a wide range of loans, guarantees and equity-type funding. Financing is either provided directly or via a financial intermediary, most usually a bank or a fund. Among the most commonly used financing instruments are InnovFin and the EIB’s Venture Debt Facility.
